Dear Frank,
Thank you for asking about Artificial Nesting Platforms (ANP). We recommend waiting for at least three years of monitoring nesting failures due to any of the three reasons: predation, water level fluctuations, and/or development. If the loons have been successful in previous years, they will not likely use the ANP. You many need to apply for a permit with the DNR if your lake is designated as Special Natural Resource Concern. Also, this is a life-long commitment that requires yearly maintenance.
