Loons nesting.

Thank you Frank for checking up on the loons nesting situation.

Dear Frank,
Thank you for asking about Artificial Nesting Platforms (ANP).  We recommend waiting for at least three years of monitoring nesting failures due to any of the three reasons: predation, water level fluctuations, and/or development.  If the loons have been successful in previous years, they will not likely use the ANP.  You many need to apply for a permit with the DNR if your lake is designated as Special Natural Resource Concern.  Also, this is a life-long commitment that requires yearly maintenance.  For more information, and to find out if your lake is designated, please go to our website https://www.northland.edu/sustain/soei/loonwatch/protect-loons/ and click on “Artificial Nesting Platforms”.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,
